Russia demanded today that ethnic Armenian forces from Nagorno-Karabakh halt their advance through Azerbaijani territory. A Russian Foreign Ministry statement said the separatist forces were pushing southwest despite a cease-fire. The advance “could have catastrophic consequences for tens of thousands of refugees on the threshold of winter,” said the statement, published by the Itar-Tass news agency.
Thousands have been killed since 1988 in fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh, a region of Azerbaijan largely inhabited by Armenians who declared independence in 1991. Nagorno-Karabakh forces have already captured large areas of Azerbaijan.
